Hello dear readers! We bring you some Earth Day News!

An Invitation to Wonder was screened at the end of April. You can watch the trailer here: https://vimeo.com/639344584. Please lend your support to this beautiful project – now available to watch online for a small sum!

An Invitation to Wonder: Waubesa Wetlands. Embark on a journey into Waubesa Wetlands as Calvin DeWitt, a wetland scientist and Nelson Institute faculty emeritus, shares the knowledge and wisdom he has found from living on the marsh for over 50 years. Taking these lessons, his grandson, a 20-year-old filmmaker, sets out to gain a deeper understanding of the marsh and his grandfather’s unique connection with it.

Then, our beloved theologian Dave Bookless, Head of Theology at ARI, spoke on a podcast to mark this Day. This was a refreshing dialogue (only 22 minutes in length!) with a Muslim environmentalist, Huda Alkaff based in the US (Founder of Wisconsin Green Muslims).

Finally, most joyous news from Ezechiel Busime (Director of Mission and Development at MVC) on how the Ministère de la Vie Chrétienne (MVC), through its community development department and its association: Young Climate stewards (JIC) celebrated Earth Day.

They planted 525 trees of Congolese origin including: Meosophis and the Savonnier at the mountain overlooking the city of Uvira. This area suffers the adverse effects of climate change. We are glad to share with you these pictures of their reforestation activities, and hope this both encourages and inspires you to tend the spaces and places you are in!

A Reminder: Anticipating Earth Day 2025: Our Power, Our Planet http://news.lwccn.com/2025/04/a-reminder-anticipating-earth-day-2025-our-power-our-planet/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=a-reminder-anticipating-earth-day-2025-our-power-our-planet Thu, 03 Apr 2025 09:13:27 +0000 http://news.lwccn.com/?p=1884

Did you know?

On April 22nd, 2025, Earth Day will turn 55, with 192 countries and over one billion people around the globe expected to participate. This demonstrates how the diverse Earth Day movement remains as dedicated today as it was back in 1970 to bringing everyone together for a better future. (Find out more facts, here!)

So as Earth Day 2025 beckons, here are some opportunities to attend to various creation care activities!

This year, earthday.org is organising their flagship event ‘Earth Action Day’—a coordinated global event that draws together leaders (whether government or church!), policymakers and the wider community to discuss and implement meaningful solutions for the sake of our shared planet.

The theme for Earth Day 2025, “Our Power, Our Planet,” underscores the vital role communities play in transitioning to renewable energy and sustainable practices. While Earth Day officially falls on April 22nd—which is close to Easter Sunday this year—churches, faith groups, and other communities are encouraged to plan these Earth Day events at any time throughout April.

Earthday.org offers a litany of resources, activities, and opportunities for you to get involved! Here are (just a few!) ways by which you can get involved:

  1. Host an Earth Action Day Forum: Bring together church leaders and local officials alike to discuss integrating renewable energy within your community. You can register your event on the Earth Day Map, along with any other Earth Day activities you host!
  2. Make a Commitment: Encourage your church or faith group to expand its use of renewable energy this year.
  3. Incorporate the Theme: Use ‘Our Power, Our Planet’ theme in your Earth Day initiatives.

How can earthday.org support you in these efforts?

  • Virtual consultations and event planning support.
  • Assistance in recruiting elected officials for forums.
  • Publicity for your event through local and national media, including inclusion on the Earth Day Global Event Map.
  • Access to resources such as the theme fact sheet, pamphlets, and organising toolkits.
  • Event planning checklists like the Forum Checklist.

If you are interested in participating or have any questions, reach out to earthday.org’s Faith Outreach Associate at raskin@earthday.org or bunch@earthday.org

Flourishing Future Film Festival – 21 April http://news.lwccn.com/2022/04/flourishing-future-film-festival-21-april/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=flourishing-future-film-festival-21-april Wed, 06 Apr 2022 13:38:41 +0000 http://news.lwccn.com/?p=1163

Earth Day is coming, and with it, Evangelical Environmental Network’s now annual film festival. This event will be held online and will feature the film Virginia’s Calling, a documentary by Barry Lyons and Linda Nieman.

In the film, a homeschooling mom’s picture-perfect life is shattered when her home floods. Just as she hits rock-bottom, an unlikely spiritual guide appears. A warm, intimate portrait of a strong and determined woman of faith, Virginia’s Calling offers a sensitive look into the human effects of climate change on an evangelical family that never thought it would affect them.

After the screening of the film, we will have a live panel and Q&A with the protagonist of the film, Virginia herself, as well as producers Barry and Linda.

You can register for the event here. (21 April 7 pm US Eastern Time)

Earth Day is Coming (1) http://news.lwccn.com/2021/04/earth-day-is-coming-1/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=earth-day-is-coming-1 Thu, 01 Apr 2021 17:15:00 +0000 http://news.lwccn.com/?p=910

Earth Day 2021 will again be a virtual, online event on 22 April. We are informed that the folks at Earthday.org would very much like to include faith communities around the world in this year’s celebration.

To that end, there is a Faith and the Environment page at Earthday.org with a good list of resources. Check it out.

Since the first Earth Day in 1970, incredible environmental goals have been achieved, thanks largely to efforts by people of faith. The global faith community is a critical voice in overcoming obstacles and integrating environmental issues into political, social and economic agendas.

The theme for Earth Day 2021 is Restore Our Earth, which focuses on natural processes and emerging green technologies that can restore harmony with the world’s ecosystems. Join Earth Day 2021 and help us Restore Our Earth, not just because we care about the natural world, but because we are a part of it as well.

Earth Day is coming… (2) http://news.lwccn.com/2021/04/earth-day-is-coming-2/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=earth-day-is-coming-2 Thu, 01 Apr 2021 16:55:00 +0000 http://news.lwccn.com/?p=898

Here’s another Earth Day opportunity:

InterFaith Power and Light is offering a free kit of materials for congregations to use in celebrating Earth Day. Some of these materials will be North America specific, but others might find useful ideas here*.

Faith Climate Action Week is Interfaith Power & Light’s annual program of climate-themed worship services and sermons that spans ten days of activities around Earth Day. This year’s dates are April 16-25. Join the community of people of faith preaching, teaching, and acting to heal the climate in 2021!

Congregations across the nation are using these kits to plan their Earth Month activities.

The theme of this year’s Faith Climate Action Week is “Sacred Ground: Cultivating Connections Between our Faith, our Food, and the Climate.” We will examine how our food systems contribute to injustice and to climate change, and how our faith traditions call us to respond with practical solutions.

Download the kit here.

The kit includes a Sacred Ground Guide, with information on how the ways in which we grow our food can be part of the climate solution and also bring about a more just community. In the kit there are faith-based discussion materials; suggested short films; a Garden Blessing ceremony; and suggestions and resources for how to get engaged in supporting food justice and healthy soil.  Also included are an updated Climate Change Fact Sheet and advocacy postcards addressed to the Secretary of Agriculture. Consider printing and slipping them into your congregation’s mailings.

Faith Climate Action Week 2021 offerings on our website also include sample sermons and talks, and resources for worship services.

Pin your Covid-safe in-person and online Faith Climate Action Week events on the IPL map to show the world that people of faith are leading the climate movement!

*LWCCN and The Pollinator provide links to materials like this without necessarily endorsing the content therein. Readers should review any material for appropriateness for their local situation.

Earth Day 50 Recap http://news.lwccn.com/2020/04/earth-day-50-recap/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=earth-day-50-recap Thu, 30 Apr 2020 10:35:45 +0000 http://news.lwccn.com/?p=626

Earth Day’s 50th Anniversary has come and gone. Far from being a triumphant, celebratory look back at 50 years of progress, this Earth Day was more of a preview of what is to come if we continue wanton abuse of God’s creation. Even so, the folks at Earthday.org managed to put together a full day’s worth of encouragement and suggestions from people around the world.

You can find a recap of the day’s highlights here, with links to messages from Pope Francis, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and others, as well as suggestions for how you can continue in the spirit of Earth Day.

Earth Day 50 is coming – are you ready? http://news.lwccn.com/2019/12/earth-day-50-is-coming-are-you-ready/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=earth-day-50-is-coming-are-you-ready Tue, 31 Dec 2019 12:08:06 +0000 http://news.lwccn.com/?p=431

April 20, 2020 marks 50 years since the first Earth Day. That first event was primarily a US-focused awareness raising campaign that involved millions of people and thousands of schools, universities and communities across the nation. (Ed Brown was there! Were you? Tell us about it!)

Earth Day 50 will a global event. We’re hoping to see LWCCN members in at least 50 countries joining their communities on that day, celebrating and working to bring restoration and healing to our parts of God’s creation, wherever we happen to live.

In the US, there will be a massive demonstration in Washington DC, and additional LWCCN activities surrounding that. Look for more details in our next newsletter. If you want to get a head start, contact us for ideas and suggestions.
