Job Description:

Since 2012, ECHO’s East Africa Impact Center has been serving our network across the region. The second of four RICs around the world, they have proven the adaptability and robustness of the RIC model to contextualize ECHO’s services to the unique needs and ecological/cultural contexts of those we serve. The first ECHO East Africa Director is now planning to retire in late 2024. This will allow the right candidate time to overlap with this passionate and highly effective individual.

The new director will expand and strengthen the capacity of the diverse regional network to defeat hunger and improve lives through sustainable food and agricultural strategies in East Africa. The director is responsible for building upon the current regional network and serving that network with joy by identifying, validating, sharing, and measuring the efficacy of contextualized agricultural strategies (4 core functions of ECHO) with technical excellence for the Glory of God. In short, network building and training experience will be essential qualities of an effective director.

During its existence over the past 13 years, ECHO Asia has grown to a team of 18 Thai and international staff, has a significant online network presence, hosts numerous trainings on-site and throughout the region each month, and is based on a Small Farm Center and Seed Bank with a dedicated training facility in Chiang Mai. ECHO East Africa is hosting a symposium at the end of September that will be online. Description is as follows:

ECHO East Africa Biennial Symposium on Sustainable Agriculture and Appropriate Technologies connects individuals and organizations who seek to share their knowledge and best practices in these areas:

to improve nutrition, reduce poverty, hunger, and physical hardship by engaging farmers more effectively to adapt their farming systems
to respond to climate change and declining yields in Africa with sustainable options which improve the environment, regenerate soils and water catchments, recycle resources and mitigate the effect of weather extremes
to combine a wide range of approaches holistically to enhance the resilience of the vulnerable and to care for the earth
to have a relevant response to the current COVID pandemic
to promote continued learning and sharing through networks

The ECHO East Africa Biennial Symposium will provide a network and training opportunity for those involved in alleviating hunger and poverty in East Africa. Three-hour sessions on the three afternoons will feature knowledgeable and experienced speakers and a chance to interact with them in workshops and discussion groups led by regional agricultural development workers and experts.

Echo’s 27th International Conference is coming

For twenty-six years, ECHO in south Florida has been providing instruction, training, and encouragement for agricultural workers at their home base every November. Thanks to Covid-19, ECHO’s 27th International Agricultural Conference will be open to participants from around the world, no visas or airplane tickets needed. The conference will be streamed worldwide on November 19.

For twenty-six years, ECHO has brought together networks of like-minded individuals devoted to eradicating hunger and improving lives through agriculture and community development. In its 27th year, in light of constraints due to novel coronavirus, the ECHO International Agriculture Conference will be completely virtual in its presentation of speakers addressing agricultural challenges, personal experiences, and strategies for improving the lives of millions who daily face food insecurity.

Anyone interested or working in agricultural development would benefit from the topics presented at this conference and networking with others in attendance. Those who typically attend fall into one or more categories:

-Short-term or career missionaries
-National community leaders and farmers
-Leaders of development/relief-oriented organizations

ECHO is a long-time friend of the creation care movement, and one of the world leaders in providing technical assistance to small-scale farmers, particularly those working in a Christian development or missions context.

“Small Scale: Up Scale” is the theme for ECHO’s Asia Agricultural Conference, coming to Chiang Mai in October. If you’re in the region, and at all interested in agriculture, this event is for you. The cost appears reasonable, and scholarships are available (see link for more information).
